Job Purpose
The Business Development Manager will develop and implement business development and fundraising strategy including establishing the infrastructure to grow the current annual revenue stream. Identify and build relationships with relevant stakeholders including INGOs, CSOs and government for strategic partnerships, resource mobilisation and project delivery. Lead Identification of funding opportunities in line with the organisations Country Strategy and program priorities and coordinate proposals development in close collaboration with Program teams.


Summary of Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement organizational business development and fundraising strategy, proposal writing and processes.
  • Lead Identification of funding opportunities in line with organisations Country Strategy and program priorities and coordinate proposals development in close collaboration with Program teams.
  • Provide guidance and support to the development of proactive concepts, converting ideas into sellable proposals and actively participate in identifying sources of support for such proposals.
  • Oversee compliance with donor requirements by ensuring that all reporting deadlines are met on time and that reports meet the highest standards and quality as outlined in donor reporting guidelines.
  • Produce regular reports for senior management on business development performance analysis
  • Ensure coordinated communication with donors and partner NGOs. This may involve managing relationships for a portfolio of donors.
  • Act as point of contact for partnerships and relations with NGOs and international donors, government ministries, other NGOs and Country Offices on grants and compliance-related issues.
  • Maintain and provide donor intelligence and identify new funding opportunities
  • Take the lead in the development, implementation and evaluation of strategic plans, business plans and operational policies and procedures for the Organisation.
  • Identify and build relationships with relevant stakeholders including INGOs, CSOs and government for strategic partnerships, resource mobilisation and project delivery.
  • Research best practices with other like-minded organisations to ensure that best practice is incorporated into the Institute’s procedures, processes and policies.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and periodic review of organisations resource mobilisation strategy and the preparation of the resource mobilization plan.
  • Review concept notes and proposals and reports against the Girl Criteria and the Gender Equality Programme Criteria to ensure all new proposals are gender-transformative.
  • Work with the Monitoring Evaluation and Learning and the program team to extricate program learning and evidence to support the quality and innovativeness of funding concepts and proposals.
  • Help to develop better tools, systems, techniques and strategies for identifying, tracking, and pursuing new business opportunities, developing proposals and budgets, and managing institutional knowledge.


Required Skills and Competencies

  • Strong interpersonal and professional communication skills; articulate writer.
  • Proven relationship-building skills (INGOs & Government)
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a wide variety of people and organisations.
  • Good leadership skills and the ability to lead, co-ordinate and work with teams
  • Excellent negotiating skills.
  • Solid analytical skills and ability to filter and distil critical information.
  • Proficiency with financial data, including budgeting, with close attention to detail.
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to manage a fluctuating workload, prioritise and meet tight deadlines.

Primary Areas of Accountability:

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree in Development Studies or relevant discipline
  • Masters qualification or above will be a plus
  • Must have a minimum of 6-8 years experience in resource mobilisation in an NGO or donor organisation with at least 3 years in a management position with experience in Business Development and Planning
  • Successful track record of securing multiple high-value projects/contracts from bilateral and multilateral donors, trusts and foundations. Specific experience securing significant funding from donors such as USAID, the Global Fund, DFID, EC and other new donors.
  • Significant expertise in all areas of new business development including strategy, forging
    partnerships including negotiating teaming agreements, project design, log frame development, proposal writing, budget development, managing donor and other partners
  • Be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of accepted good practice in business development or marketing within the public and private sector.
  • Membership with an appropriate professional body (But Not a Must)
