Job Purpose:
The Assistant Animal Nutritionist will be responsible for on-site stock feed mill formulation support, ensuring that all dietary needs are met for various animal feed products. Be responsible for creating and balancing rations to ensure all dietary needs are met for the animals. Formulate diets and rations to maximise growth, reproduction, health and performance of the animals.

Summary of Key Responsibilities:
  • Considering the varied nutritional needs of different species so as to formulate balanced rations, assess nutritional and caloric requirements based on type, physical activity such as performance, reproduction, lactation or overcoming nutritional deficiencies.
  • Support the quality assurance department in determining quality assurance results for all the undertaken tests on Stock feed raw materials stock and its various finished products.
  • Use an assessment known as body condition scoring, to determine what adjustments should be made to an animal’s diet
  • Using specialist computer software to devise diets and produce reports
  • Evaluate the chemical and nutritional value of feeds, feed supplements, grass and forage for animals
  • Formulate diets and rations to maximise growth, reproduction, health and performance
  • Assess the relative nutritional and economic value of feeding systems
  • Conduct animal-based studies and laboratory trials
  • Monitor feed formulations to meet quality performance and animal health standards
  • Rationalize animal feed manufacturing techniques
  • Expand existing ranges of animal food products and develop new ones
  • Maintain expertise in nutritional trends and keep up to date with regulatory changes

Primary Areas of Accountability:
Qualifications and Experience
  • Full Grade Twelve (12) School Certificate
  • Degree in Animal Science
  • At least a minimum of two (2) years’ work experience in such a similar role
  • Proven experience in understanding of the scientific basis of nutrition
  • Must have appreciation of the interdisciplinary nature of science and the validity of others' viewpoints
  • Must be passionate about animals
