Description:
Job Purpose;
The Landscape Field Officer will play a supportive role to the Kabompo Landscape Manager in the planning, coordination, and implementation of the organisation’s multi-sectoral landscape-based interventions in the West Lunga ecosystem and the wider Kabompo catchment. The Officer will would have the role of undertaking field activities including: engaging with stakeholders; provide assistance with research projects on the ground; assist in day to day running of the Jivundu field office.
 
Summary of Key Responsibilities;
  • Support the Kabompo Landscape Manager to design innovative conservation solutions for collaborative management and protection of ecosystems for provision of ecosystem goods and services.
  •  Actively participate in the planning and implementation of both socio-economic and biological research fieldwork in the Kabompo Landscape.
  •  Coordinate meetings and workshops with communities or other stakeholders in the landscape.
  •  Support the Kabompo Landscape Manager to prepare reports and technical documents when required.
  •  Implement initiatives to strengthen the communities in project areas through sustainable resource uses of forests, fisheries and wildlife.
  •  Liaise closely with communities, traditional leaders, district and provincial offices and relevant government departments to ensure synergy and support for site activities.
  •  Perform any other project related activities/duties as required and directed by the Kabompo Landscape Manager.
 
Required Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of freshwater ecosystems, fisheries, wildlife and forest management with strengths in ecological and social research, fisheries/wildlife management operations and rural development;
  • The ability to work well with people from different cultures and backgrounds;
  • Understanding of the actors in the field of ecological and conservation research in Zambia would be beneficial;
  • Familiarity with key Zambian natural resource management policy, legislation and government departments is an added advantage.
 
Required Skills and Competencies:
  • Ability to work as part of a team while at the same time be able to work independently if needed;
  • Proficient writing, speaking and listening skills in English, proficiency in Kaonde or Lunda is required;
  • Experience in financial planning and management skills is a bonus;
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines, high pressure situations;
 


Primary Areas of Accountability:
Qualifications and Experience
  • MSc Degree in the field of Natural Resource Management/ Wildlife or Fisheries Management/ or Biology, Geography or Social Sciences; or a Honours Degree with significant equivalent research experience and/or community engagement experience.
  • Valid Zambian drivers licence;
  • Experience in natural resource research with a focus on design and execution of qualitative and quantitative research projects and landscape-based approaches;
  • Field experience as a project/programme officer and team member of multidisciplinary research teams;
  • Experience with engaging and working with communities on conservation or natural resource management issues;
  • Experience in participatory and multi-stakeholder processes;
  • Experience in working in a remote setting, basic facilities and infrastructure and with a high level of independency;
  • Experience working with communities in North-Western Province, Zambia.
  • Should be able to speak either Kaonde or Lunda
