Job Purpose
The Chief Operating Officer will be responsible for leading and managing the operational aspects of the organization. The COO works closely with the CFO/CEO and other senior executives to develop and implement strategies, policies, and initiatives that drive business growth and operational excellence. Responsible for ensuring smooth cross department collaboration and also lead special projects. Supervise back-office operations, including the execution of transactions requested by both branches and the Head Office.
Summary of Key Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic direction and leadership for the organization’s day-to-day operations.
- Oversee and optimize internal processes and workflows to maximize efficiency and productivity.
- Oversee Branch Operations, Business Development (sales), and Credit Controls.
- Plan and implement the expansion both in terms of new products and services that can be offered as well as geographies of operation.
- Perform supervisory duties and coordinate with the staff in all related areas of the department
- Collaborate with the CEO and executive team to develop and execute the company’s strategic plan.
- Ensure that operational plans align with the organization’s long-term goals.
- Expertly resolve branch operations challenges that arise from day-to-day branch operations, demonstrating astute problem-solving skills.
- Serve as a vital liaison between Head Office departments and branches, facilitating seamless information flow and swift issue resolution.
- Conduct User Acceptance Testing (UAT) for new products, processes and systems, validating their readiness for deployment.
- Manage, track, and oversee departmental projects, ensuring their successful execution and timely completion.
- Identify opportunities for growth, propose new digital payments initiatives, and contribute to the strategic planning of business expansion
- Manage and allocate resources effectively, including budgeting, staffing, and capital investments.
- Monitor financial performance and profitability.
- Establish and oversee IT governance frameworks, ensuring robust cybersecurity measures and compliance with industry regulations.
- Manage IT-related risks proactively to safeguard the institution’s assets and reputation.
- Establish and maintain quality standards and best practices across all operational areas.
- Implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance quality and performance.
- Oversee supply chain management, procurement, and logistics to ensure timely delivery of products or services.
- Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous learning.
- Ensure that the organization and branches compile with all relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards.
- Focus on improving the overall customer experience by aligning operational processes with customer needs and expectations.
- Monitor and respond to customer feedback and concerns.
- Develop and implement environmentally sustainable practices and initiatives in line with corporate responsibility goals.
- Participate in M&A activities, due diligence, and integration efforts.
- Identify and evaluate strategic partnerships and alliances.

Primary Areas of Accountability:
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, or a related field
- MBA or equivalent advanced degree in any of the above fields will be a plus
- Must have a minimum of 7-10 years of experience in banking operations, with at least 5 years in a senior management position
- Proven experience in a senior operations leadership role, preferably as a COO or similar Senior position in the Banking and Financial Services Sector
- Holding the same role with a Digital Mobile Payments Company or Micro-financial Institution will be a plus
- Strong knowledge of operational best practices, process optimization, and business management.
- Strong understanding of banking operations. Mobile Payments and Fin Tech trends
- Must have proven experience with Bank of Zambia reporting requirements and procedures
- Demonstrable record of effectively managing large teams of people
- Solid understanding of regulatory requirements and compliance in the banking and financial services sector.
- Proven experience in evaluating and revising operations and procedures in response to organizational change.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with administration, staff, clients, and external individuals and entities.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic initiatives.
- Must be a member of a relevant professional body
